Classification for Community Engagement
The University of Florida has earned the Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement in the 2026 cycle. This mark of excellence highlights UF as a premier university beyond academics, through its integration of service and leadership across curricular and co-curricular opportunities. This classification recognizes the university’s deep, reciprocal partnerships in the Greater Gainesville community and affirms our measurable impact nation-wide.
Unlike rankings or awards, this classification results from an extensive, evidence-based, peer-reviewed process. Institutions document how community engagement is embedded throughout their mission and academic programs. Successful candidates demonstrate sustained partnerships that enrich research, teaching, and public service while addressing real community needs.
What is Community Engagement?
The Carnegie Foundation defines community engagement as collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity.
The purpose of community engagement is the partnership of college and university knowledge and resources with those of the public and private sectors to enrich scholarship, research, and creative activity; enhance curriculum, teaching, and learning; prepare educated, engaged citizens; strengthen democratic values and civic responsibility; address critical societal issues; and contribute to the public good.

Looking Ahead
In receiving this classification, the university aims to continue strengthening our community and government partnerships, by showcasing our incredible displays of student, faculty, and staff leadership.
